What is VQE?
VQE is a hybrid quantum algorithm that approximates the ground-state energy of a molecule by tuning a parameterised quantum circuit in a classical optimisation loop.
In VQE the quantum computer prepares a trial state with a parameterised circuit and measures its energy; the classical computer updates the parameters to lower that energy. The loop continues until the energy stops falling.
Its circuits are short, so it suits NISQ devices, and it is the most studied algorithm in quantum chemistry. Tools such as OpenFermion translate a molecule’s electronic problem into qubits.
