Why this paper?
John Preskill's 2018 paper defines the term NISQ (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) that the whole industry uses today. It explains in non-technical language what quantum computers can and cannot do in the near term. That makes it a good first read for anyone who wants to enter the field.
Summary
- NISQ devices: According to the paper, these devices with 50–100 qubits may outperform today's classical computers on some tasks. Without error correction, noise limits the depth of circuits that can be run.
- Expectations: Simulating quantum many-body physics, variational algorithms (VQE, QAOA) and quantum optimisation are the first areas to be tried. But a definite advantage over classical methods is not guaranteed.
- Caveat: NISQ is an intermediate step on the road to fault-tolerant quantum computing. The real transformation will become possible with quantum error correction.
Reading guide
- Read the introduction and conclusion first. The paper's main idea is there.
- After the section on variational algorithms, run this store's "QAOA for MaxCut" and "VQE with PennyLane" packages.
- For error correction, move on to the "Surface code error correction experiment" package.
